Since its return to Chinese rule, Hong Kong has maintained its own legal system, currency, customs policy, immigration regime, police force, and education system while enjoying a high degree of autonomy from Beijing.

What Happened to Kento Bento 2022
It’s been a little over two years since the last time we heard anything about Kento Bento, the all-in-one Japanese meal delivery service that was supposed to make our lives easier. After a successful crowdfunding campaign in early 2020, Kento Bento disappeared without a trace, leaving behind frustrated customers and angry investors.
So what happened?
According to reports, Kento Bento ran into financial trouble almost immediately after launching. The company struggled to keep up with customer demand, and quickly ran through its initial investment. With no additional funding forthcoming, Kento Bento was forced to shut down operations in late 2020.
While it’s always disappointing to see a promising startup fail, there are some lessons to be learned from the demise of Kento Bento. First and foremost, delivery-based businesses are extremely capital intensive. It takes a lot of money to buy inventory, hire drivers, and build out the necessary infrastructure.
Secondly, even small disruptions can cause big problems for companies like Kento Bento that operate on thin margins. A single bad review or negative news story can have a devastating impact on business. We hope that the team behind Kento Bento will one day try again with another venture.

Kento Bento Hijacking Part 2
In my previous post, I talked about the Kento Bento hijacking incident that occurred on May 9th. In this post, I will be providing more detailed information about what happened during and after the incident.
At around 4:00 PM JST, a man hijacked a Kento Bento delivery truck in the city of Osaka. He then drove the truck into oncoming traffic, causing it to crash into several cars. The man then got out of the truck and began attacking people with a knife.
He stabbed two people before being subdued by police. Both of the victims were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect is currently in police custody and is being questioned about his motive for the attack.
In a city where space is limited, Hong Kong has found an unlikely solution to its food storage problem – giant refrigerators.
Located in the heart of the city, these huge walk-in units are able to store large quantities of fresh produce, meat and seafood. And with temperatures inside controlled at a cool 2-4 degrees Celsius, it’s no wonder that Hong Kong’s restaurants and supermarkets are some of the best stocked in the world.
But how did this system come about? It all started back in the 1970s when the government decided to build a central kitchen in Kowloon Bay. This facility would be able to provide meals for the growing population, as well as create jobs for those living in the area.
However, construction delays meant that the kitchen wasn’t completed until 1983 – by which time it was already obsolete. So instead, it was transformed into a giant refrigerator. Nowadays, there are four such units across Hong Kong, each one larger than the last.
They may not be pretty, but they’re certainly effective!
